It only proves you are never too old to learn new tricks. I can't vouch for Ariston's gyros being of Hall of Fame quality, since I've only had one in my lifetime, but it's a tasty alternative from burgers and hot dogs and perhaps a bit healthier. It is usually served wrapped or stuffed in a flatbread such as pita with tomato, onion, tzatziki sauce and sometimes French fries. Originally lamb, it is now most often pork or chicken with a mixture of beef and lamb. So what is a Gyros all about? It is a Greek dish made from meat cooked on a vertical rotissiere. Friday and Saturday and 11 to 11 on Sunday, Ariston has been a thriving success under the guidance of co-owners Nick Reveliotis and his brothers-in-law Tom and Jim Katris. Open from 10 to midnight Monday through Thursday, 10 to 1 a.m. Why not? Ariston was inducted into the Vienna Beef Hot Dog Hall of Fame in 2017 but the restaurant at 17501 Kedzie Avenue, which opened in 1984, also has a good reputation for burgers, gyros and cheesesteaks, served in a fast-food style with a drive-through window and outdoor seating. They said Ariston's had a good reputation for its Gyros. I was about to order an old standby, a plate of jumbo shrimp, when someone suggested I try a Gyros. But I finally was tempted to try one while having lunch with a group of old newspaper colleagues at Ariston Restaurant in Hazel Crest, Illinois, a Chicago suburb.

I'm not of Greek ancestry so I suppose I can be excused for not experiencing a Gyros sandwich for the last 70 years.
